Joanna Howells

Humour

A Wag to the Wise
Wit and Wisdom from the Dog World

by Joanna Howells

Joanna Howells was born near Rugby in Warwickshire. She read Medicine at Cambridge University but decided to become a studio potter rather than a doctor. She gained a Distinction in Pottery Studies at the renowned course at the Harrow College of Higher Education. She is now a ceramic artist with an international reputation.

Joanna came late to sharing her life with dogs, having grown up with cats, but she soon discovered the joys of relaxing with her canine companions after a long day at the pottery wheel.

Visitors to her studio quickly notice that Joanna’s dogs have their food and water presented in porcelain bowls that would be considered highly desirable to pottery enthusiasts. Whether the dogs recognize this distinction is unknown but they all eat in unhurried fashion as if enjoying their dining experience to the full. As Lucie the Golden Retriever might have it, “More haste, less feed.”

Joanna is continually reminded of how willingly dogs become part of a family and how quickly they learn to do helpful tasks, like finding lost gloves or beanies and closing doors behind them.
